A gender expert, Deborah Owhin, has called on Nigerians and civil society organisations to raise their voices in defense of the girl child.
She made the during the 2021 International Day of the Girl Child (#IDGC2021), October 11 with the theme: Digital generation, our generation.
The theme, according to her, brings the chance for active participation online and in-person through promoting awareness through media outlets, company websites, social media, and blogs.
“This #IDGC202 is a time to recognize the achievements of girls, host conversations about the needs of girls, amplify the issues of girls by supporting a local community group, celebrate the girls in your life and share a special moment from your childhood online via social media,” she said.
Deborah is a globally recognized gender expert having investigated domestic homicides and how governments can prevent them, she’s spearheaded delegations to the UN on ending and preventing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and has contributed to resolutions on convicting perpetrators of sexual abuse in conflict regions.
Deborah is a problem-solver for some of the world’s biggest companies yet continues to provide strategic direction to charitable organizations focused on ending VAWG globally, notably, she secured over $100,000 in gifts from Fortune 500 companies for non-profits working for women and girls in the past year.
She has been recognized as an authority on issues related to VAWG by The Financial Times, Sky News, The Guardian, London Live, United Nations, UN Women, University of Oxford, and the Skoll Foundation, among others, for her problem-solving passion and actions, be it on women’s rights, or corporate business solutions.
