A Nigerian in the diaspora and Convener of Virtues Women International Initiative, Dr. Felicia Okoye, has said Nigerians are hungry due to the harsh economic impact, saying most families cannot afford good food and equally skip meals.

Okoye stated this on October 16 during World Food Day (WFD).

She pondered how government can end hunger and food insecurity in the country.

Okoye, who celebrated the day with women and children in Ajegunle community, Lagos State, distributed food items, sanitary pads to adolescent girls.

She said in the UK, food is affordable, and on the government to emulate it by making the price of food to be low.

“A lot of people are truly frustrated with the high cost of living.

The meeting was facilitated by the two foundations, Virtues Women International Initiative and Dreams from the Slump.

Okoye added that government need to recognize that several people in Nigeria go hungry and suffer from malnutrition.

She stressed that government need to invest in food production, in order to reduced the high rise in living conditions, as a lot of family can no longer afford to eat nutritional food or hardly get a three square meal due to economic crunch.

She said food is the only thing that can bring hunger to an end. Food is not just a basic need; it is also an indispensable need in the life of every human being. We cannot do without food. We need food for growth, sustenance and nourishment. Without food we cannot reason or even function actively.

“Considering the importance of food, she decided to collaborate with Isaac Success Omoyele, the founder of Dreams from the Slump to bring succour to women, girls, children in Ajegunle community, in order to celebrate the International Day of the girl-child and world food day.

Okoye explained that food shortage, in Nigeria
is caused by wrong distribution of resources, the way our leaders treat its citizens, is not obtainable anywhere in the world.
” Today, I have been able to give them something, what happens, once they have exhausted it. They need to devise a means to tackle hardship.
